Description:

Course "Fake News and Fact-Checking: Tools for Critical Thinking in the Digital Age," equips educators with the skills to help students navigate the digital landscape responsibly. Over five days, participants will explore key topics such as identifying fake news, recognizing misinformation techniques, and understanding the role of social media in spreading false information. They will engage in critical thinking exercises, learn to analyze news articles, and explore fact-checking tools like Snopes, PolitiFact, and Google Fact Check Explorer. Educators will also discover strategies to promote skepticism and inquiry in the classroom, develop a classroom code of conduct for digital media use, and integrate media literacy into their lessons. The workshop combines lectures, hands-on activities, group discussions, and collaborative planning to ensure practical, actionable outcomes. Day 1: Understanding Fake News

  • Types and techniques of misinformation (e.g., clickbait, deepfakes).
  • Discussion: Recognizing bias and misleading information in media.
  • Case studies: Analyzing examples of fake news.

Day 2: Developing Critical Thinking Skills

  • Introduction to critical thinking: Its role in navigating the digital world.
  • Workshop: Promoting skepticism and inquiry in classroom discussions.
  • Interactive activity: Analyzing and comparing news articles.
  • Strategies for teaching source evaluation and credibility checks.

Day 3: Using Fact-Checking Tools

  • Overview of popular fact-checking platforms (e.g., Snopes, FactCheck.org).
  • Live demonstration: Fact-checking step-by-step.
  • Hands-on activity: Debunking misinformation using tools and platforms.
  • Brainstorm: Integrating fact-checking into lesson plans and assignments.

Day 4: Encouraging Responsible Digital Citizenship

  • Understanding social media’s role in spreading misinformation.
