Description:
This course Mindful Conversations: Applying cognitive-behavioral Principles to Communication in the Learning Environment focuses on enhancing communication in schools using cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles. Teachers will learn how to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents by recognizing cognitive distortions, managing emotions, and fostering open, supportive dialogue. This course emphasizes active listening, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution, equipping teachers with the tools to build a positive and collaborative learning environment where students feel heard and understood.
Learning outcomes:
- Identify communication barriers and cognitive distortions that hinder effective communication in schools.
- Use CBT-based techniques to manage emotions and facilitate constructive conversations.
- Apply active listening and empathy to enhance interactions with students, colleagues, and parents.

Day 1: Understanding the Role of Communication in the School Environment
- How communication shapes relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Introduction to CBT: the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
- Common communication barriers in schools, including cognitive distortions.
- Group discussion: Personal communication challenges in the classroom.
- Identifying cognitive distortions in common school scenarios.
- Self-assessment: Analyzing personal communication styles.
Day 2: Enhancing Active Listening and Emotional Awareness
- The role of active listening in building trust and improving classroom dynamics.
- Emotional regulation: Recognizing and managing emotions during conversations.
- Empathy as a key element of effective communication.
- Pair work: Practicing active listening and reflecting back key points.
- Emotional awareness exercise: Identifying emotional cues in students’ non-verbal communication.
- Group activity: Practicing empathetic responses in difficult conversations.
Day 3: Mindful Communication with Students
- The difference between assertive, passive, and aggressive communication styles.
- Teaching students to express their thoughts and feelings constructively.
- Communicating classroom expectations, feedback, and discipline using assertive communication.
- Role-play: Communicating assertively in challenging classroom situations.
- Creating scripts for giving constructive feedback and correcting student behavior.
- Group discussion: How assertiveness fosters a positive and supportive classroom climate.
Day 4: Conflict Resolution Using CBT Techniques
- Understanding how cognitive distortions fuel conflicts and misunderstanding.
- CBT strategies for addressing cognitive distortions and calming emotional responses.
- Techniques for de-escalation and collaborative conflict resolution.
- Group role-playing: Resolving classroom conflicts by challenging cognitive distortions and reframing unhelpful thoughts.
- Case study analysis: Applying CBT techniques to real-world school conflicts.
- Practice de-escalation skills for managing emotional conversations with students or parents.
Day 5: Creating a Culture of Open and Supportive Communication
- How to foster open communication among students, colleagues, and parents.
- Incorporating daily practices that encourage emotional awareness and active listening.
- Engaging parents and caregivers in constructive, supportive dialogue.
- Brainstorming session: Strategies for promoting a culture of communication in the classroom.
- Group work: Designing peer communication activities to improve collaboration among students.
- Role-playing parent-teacher conversations focused on problem-solving and partnership.
Day 6: Course closure & cultural activities
- Course evaluation: round-up of acquired competencies, feedback, and discussion;
- Awarding of the course Certificate of Attendance;
- Excursion and other external cultural activities.
